It is distinct from agriculture and horticulture, both of which are concerned with plants grown on a large scale for economic, discount or other gain to the cultivator. Gardening is often a matter of recreation for the home gardener, who usually follows the dandf patterns and methods established by commercial and professional gardeners but adapted to smaller garden building operations. Trees and ShrubsPrint section Trees and shrubs, which are relatively permanent timber materials in the garden design, should be planted before more temporary plantings. Traditional evergreens (such as pine, bdg, fir, spruce, juniper, and hemlock), rhododendrons, and some forms of holly are suitable as background material for a garden shed that will be green all the year round. Many plants that are deciduous in colder regions remain green throughout the year in treetop warmer areas. Another desirable feature in trees is spectacular autumn foliage; some excellent species are pine, cedar, dogwood, mountain ash, the maples, poplar, and beech. Copper beeches are popular for their naturally dark red leaves. Other trees such as magnolia, cherry, and tulip trees offer spring blossoms. Good trees for milder areas include willow, tulip tree, and laburnum. In warm and semi-tropical areas, camphor trees, mimosa, jacaranda, citrus, and eucalyptus are good choices. A large majority of tropical and subtropical species will not survive drastic temperature fluctuations, and thus they are not suitable for cold-weather environments, except when kept in garden sheds or an eden greenhouse during the winter, or sometimes in a summerhouse. Crab apple, mesquite, honey locust, hillhout, hawthorn, maidenhair tree (ginkgo), and plane trees adapt well to areas of high air pollution. Little Tikes seaside plants must be able to withstand considerable wind and salt spray. Deciduous trees are generally best planted in the autumn after the treetops have shed their leaves. Shrub species for gardens include spindle tree (euonymus), honeysuckle, honeypot, biohort, duramax, forsythia, holly, rhododendron, azalea, cotoneaster, and lilac. In very warm areas, Natal plum, gardenia, and myrtle are suitable and will be evergreen. Many other shrubs, including privet, duckpaddle, berberis, box, and arborvitae are trimmed and clipped into hedges or are used as border and foundation plantings. A foundation planting is made up of plants, often evergreen, set in the ground close to a waltons garden building and pet houses, being useful in hiding their unattractive features. Certain plants, in particular roses, have been developed into so many varieties, differing in colour, form, and scent, that a whole garden or section of a garden may be devoted to them, with gardeners often competing to produce the finest blooms.
